5. Daredevil – The Man Without Fear (Marvel)
A few years ago it was easy to overlook the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen: the long-lasting damage to his reputation at the hands of Ben Affleck was still lingering. That is, until Netflix worked its magic and restored our faith in just how great Daredevil is. Fans were given hints of Daredevil in the past with cameo appearances but we have yet to have the opportunity to take him down to street level. Daredevil brings enhanced speed like Spiderman, coupled with some brutal grappling skills and his signature cane. He would blend into this environment perfectly; bringing a combination of martial arts and boxing as well as some super human reflexes. Some people have even suggested a Special Attack that puts him into the “World on Fire” vision mode to buff his powers. The fact this lawyer by day has not been playable yet seems criminal.
6. Maximo – Maximo: Ghosts to Glory (Capcom)
Considering Capcom has included characters from their Ghosts N’ Goblins series, why would they not include a valiant knight such as Maximo? Inspired by the aforementioned series, Maximo is a brave knight on a quest to save the princess. He has fantastic character design and I thought it was a nice touch that each time he took damage a piece of his armor fell off – a feature that would be great to see carry over into MvC. Maximo would represent his series well, being a semi-tank close range fighter. While some may not recognize his name, Maximo was a lot of fun – something akin to a medieval Crash Bandicoot – and throwing him in as comic relief alongside the likes of Viewtiful Joe would not only flush out the roster but add to the levity of a game that shouldn’t take itself so seriously with all these dark and brooding anti-heroes.
7. Phil Coulson – Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Marvel)
How can you not? Coulson’s first appearance was in the original Iron Man movie and he was supposed to be a one-off. Instead, Clark Gregg – the actor who played him – was so well received he appeared in almost every Avengers movie so far, as well as getting his own TV show. Not only that, Coulson is now a fully canonical character in the comics, having teamed up with or interacted with almost every major Marvel character. Coulson is widely loved: he has dry wit, confidence in his beliefs, and some great comedic timing. He already appears in a few other video games armed with the Destroyer Gun seen in Avengers. Coulson would be the mic drop at the end of the roster: he could be fast, great at melee, call in S.H.I.E.L.D. ordinance, as well as use the Destroyer. If they were so inclined to follow the storyline from the TV show they could also make use of his bionic hand that projects a S.H.I.E.L.D. shield force field (try saying THAT out loud!)
8. Nina – Breath of Fire (Capcom)
A Capcom series spanning 23 years, Breath of Fire has appeared in every generation of gaming console dating back to the NES and as recent as 2016 on mobile devices. Breath of Fire is another series that everyone has heard the name at some point, even if they don’t know what it is. The series is a loosely connected medieval fantasy RPG, with its only real connections being the protagonists Ryu and Nina. Capcom has done a good job of keeping a male/female balance of its characters, and – while Nina may be the love interest for Ryu – I feel like she stands out in her own right as a leading character.
Often portrayed as a princess and always as a winged girl with magic skills, Nina presents not only the potential for unique combat but for motivation in a call to arms. Capcom has promised to give us a very real story, so to bring together these iconic characters, something climactic must happen. What better way to bring a powerful princess into the fold then to threaten her people? Nina is a strong character and the fact Breath of Fire has not yet been represented is a baffling.
