5 Reasons Why The Doom Multiplayer Beta Should Have Fans Excited & Concerned

Damage Numbers

Want to know exactly how much damage you’re dealing? You’re in luck, because Id has decided to include floating damage numbers in the multiplayer. While I’m sure some people will love seeing how much damage they’re doing, I really hope this is implemented as a toggleable option in the full release. Part of the fun from old arena shooters was not knowing how close your opponent was to death, firing off round after round hoping it would be the last so you could run and grab some health packs or armour. There’s still that sense of the unknown since your opponent could have grabbed some armour, but I think it gives people too much information in a game like this. Besides, it just doesn’t fit with Doom visually.

Armour/Gun Paint

In the same vein as the damage numbers, the armour and gun paint is in a weird place where it doesn’t quite fit, but it’s not necessarily bad. Just about everyone loves customization, and there are plenty of options in Doom 4 to let you stand out from the crowd. Things can look a bit odd however, when you’re seeing people running around on Mars with neon-coloured super shotguns or rocket launchers. One aspect does make all the bright and shiny colours a bit more plausible: wear and tear options. After you’ve prettied yourself up in shiny new paint, you can push a slider to either add scratches or dirt to armour and guns. The purists out there can still look haggard and worn, while anyone with a penchant for flair can look as bright or colourful as they want.

Id seems to have taken a lot of complaints from the Alpha very seriously, but we’ll just have to wait and see if they take the user feedback from this weekend to do some more tweaking. All I really want now is a slight speed buff, and please just bring back the old announcer from Quake. With the official release date taking place a little over a month from now on May 13th, they’ve still got some time to make minor adjustments. Doom is set to be released on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on May 13, 2016.
