Celebrating Canada Day With The Best Canadian Made Video Games

Putting the Eh! in Gaming – Celebrating Canadian Game Development

For Canada’s birthday, we thought we’d shine a bright spotlight on some of the best games developed here in the Great White North. While it’s true, we mostly spend our time caring for each other and eating Kraft Dinner, we also enjoy gaming immensely. The following is a look at some of those games broken down into four categories; Indie Gems, Triple Eh! Games, Oldies but Goodies, and a look ahead with The Future is Canadian.

Indie Gems

Small budgets be damned, these Canadian indie games are a shining example of what can be done with a great idea, dedication, and hard work.

Cuphead

Developed by: StudioMDHR. Location: Various Canadian cities such as Regina, SK and Oakville, ON (they work remotely as a team).

Cuphead is a beautiful but challenging run-and-gun platformer that sure to bring just as many tears of joy as it does tears of frustration.

Cadence of Hyrule

Developed by: Brace Yourself Games. Location: Vancouver, BC

One part brilliant indie game, one part Legend of Zelda. Cadence of Hyrule is on-track to potentially “beat” out many other contenders for 2019’s Game of the Year – it’s that good!

Guacamelee! 2

Developed by: Drinkbox Studios. Location: Toronto, ON

Guacamelee! 2

Guacamelee! 2, and it’s beloved predecessor, is a fine combination of Metroidvania gameplay with a beautiful, Mexican inspired aesthetic and story.

The Messenger

Developed by: Sabotage Studio. Location: Quebec City, QC

The Messenger is a fun homage to the classic NES Ninja Gaiden trilogy with enough modern enhancements to make it feel less gruelling. Worth checking out.

We Happy Few

Developed by: Compulsion Games. Location: Montreal, QC

We Happy Few is sure to put a smile on your face – or at least that’s what the pill bottle says it should. While the gameplay could have used some polish, the story was a real joy.
