April 2016 Loot Crate Review: Quest
Here we go again Loot Crate fans! The April 2016 Loot Crate ‘Quest’ themed mystery box has been unleashed and we break down all the goods for your reading and viewing pleasure. If you’re anything like me, you get really excited waiting for your crate to show up every month and this month was exceptionally hard to wait for. Sweet treats from Harry Potter, Labyrinth and Uncharted were promised and hot dog, Loot Crate followed through. Before we get too much further let’s do what needs to be done and unbox this beast!
Loot Crate ‘Quest’ Box – April 2016
Alright… and here we go! The first thing I saw opening up the crate this month was a Loot Crate exclusive D20 ice mould. It took me a second to figure out exactly what the hell I was looking at but then realized it was exactly what it was advertised to be. A giant vinyl ice cube mould shaped like a 20-sided die. Like any good D&D fanatic of old I wasted no time getting it filled with H20 and into the freezer. The cube itself was pretty cool (PUN!), but obviously fleeting. It was also a giant pain in the ass to remove from the mould. All in all, a neat item at best that probably won’t get overly appreciated.
Next up, was the Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End poster featuring the man, the myth, the legend himself, Nathan Drake. Not a bad little poster, but I was definitely hoping for something a little more ‘collectible’ from the franchise. As I said though, still room on the wall for it somewhere!
This was followed by the Vikings themed horn mug with holder. Functional, but largely unremarkable if you were to put it up with your collectibles. To be fair, Vikings is an amazing series and real huge fans might get a big kick out of this one. It worked for my beer, and that’s most important of all.
The pin this month went along with the Quest theme in the same manner as the D20 ice mould did and that was with a D20 themed pin in the shape of a shield. The pin we managed to pick up was the shiny, gold variant as opposed to the painted regular one. We love variants… because we generally enjoy feeling self important and special. Snazzy pin, not their best, but snazzy just the same!
Moving right along we arrived to the socks! Now when you’re opening a box blind it can take a moment for things to cement in your brain of what they actually are. I noticed Harry Potter and thought to myself, these are ugly socks, and they are, but didn’t make the connection to the seven horcruxes until I was snapping a photo of them later. They’re still, unfortunately, really ugly. My Deadpool, Baby Groot and BB-8 socks will still get much more use than these ones ever will.
Lastly was the ‘pièce de résistance‘ with the Labyrinth themed t-shirt, that I admittedly fell in love with immediately. The purple color is a bit much at first but all in all it’s one of the best t-shirts ever included in a crate. Between my children and myself, I have sat through this amazing piece of cinema no less than 100 times, but possibly less than 200… possibly. Fans of the movie, and David Bowie alike, will be pleased. I put it on pretty much as soon as the camera stopped rolling, I can’t lie to you guys.
VERDICT
This is a bit of an up and down crate on the whole. The only real down is the socks, because seven horcruxes or not, they’re kinda hideous. A very rare misstep for the Loot Crate team. The more middling gear is the ice mould and the Vikings mug because while both are kinda neat they don;t necessarily display well or stand out much. Let’s be honest, how many D20 ice cubes are you ever gonna need in your lifetime? The D20 themed shield pin was again, kind of middling, but I could see some people really digging that. Finally, the Labyrinth t-shirt is a ting of beauty and helps pull this crate out of the doldrums and into awesome territory! You can’t go wrong with Ludo, Hoggle, Sarah, Jareth the Goblin King and more. You just can’t.
Just announced was the theme for May’s crate as well and they’re going with POWER. Promised items from Marvel, World of Warcraft and Dragonball Z are on tap for the regular crate which is pretty fantastic. Even better is the promise of Lord of the Rings, Masters of the Universe, and Super Mario goods in the Level Up package which is usually well worth the investment. For a limited time you can sign up and use the code POWERUP to get $3.00 off too so get in while you fit in!
