3 Things I Love (and Hate) About The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Beta

Worst

3) Doesn’t Feel New

For all the reasons the classic maps and weapon backwards compatibility are nice, there’s a lack of new material. The beta didn’t really show off a bunch of new content either. We did get to see a couple new scorestreaks like the guardian (a non lethal weapon that projects a stun grenade beam on the enemies in a specific area). There was a single new game mode called cutthroat – a 3 v 3 v 3 that essentially expands gunfight to an extra team. There were some different loadout options too but overall it was an underwhelming showing. It’s going to be a tougher sell to get players to shell out $70 USD for a bunch of reskinned maps and weapons that carry over from Modern Warfare 2. It’s noticeable that the developers are in a holding pattern while they figure out the future of the franchise.

2) Typical Bugs & Glitches

Unsurprisingly, there were quite a few bugs and glitches in the beta. And while the beta is definitely for figuring out these in time for the full release it doesn’t make them any less annoying. Some of the biggest issues happened in Ground War. I played 15 games of this and was only able to complete 4 of them. I was kicked from the server and experienced some random errors for the other 11 games. Additionally, maps would show up as black blocks for 10-15 seconds before loading the actual environment. There was also a good amount of lag and some occasional game buffering. Hopefully, they can sort this out before November 10th because otherwise it’ll be cause to skip over certain game modes and it will impact leveling up.

1) Poor Spawns

There’s really not much to say here. I’ve been playing Call of Duty for well over a decade and there have always been spawning issues. These were out in full force during the beta. I was shot in the back shortly after spawning so many times it was infuriating. Maybe my expectations of Modern Warfare 3 being free of the spawning issues that have long plagued the franchise were a little lofty. I can dare to dream though, right?

Honestly, Modern Warfare 3 is a hell of a lot more fun than I originally thought it would be. Is it going to be the greatest Call of Duty of all time? Probably not. Is it going to be a damn good time and will it bring back old players who have stayed away for a while? Absolutely. Fingers crossed they fix the issues and we get a couple surprise bits of content on November 10th. Maybe the return of Team Defender and 12 v 12 matches of ground war on some of the larger maps? One can only hope.
