Rhythm Heaven Groove Review – Hitting All the Right Notes

Rhythm Heaven Groove Review

After a decade, Nintendo has finally decided to revisit the Rhythm Heaven/Paradise franchise, allowing fans of the series to rejoice in perfect unison for the release. With its signature blend of offbeat humour, catchy tracks, and addictive challenges, the series is poised to bring back the joyful frustration that defined its earlier entries. But will Rhythm Heaven Groove manage to surprise and delight both longtime fans and first‑time players?

Rhythm Heaven Groove is a collection of well-designed and deliciously delightful minigames. Each bite-sized level features a distinct design and gameplay hook, helping to make segments feel unique. The visual cues, combined with the toe-tapping tunes, help you quickly lock into the rhythm of the tracks to complete objectives. Each stage grows in difficulty with patterns becoming more complex and the speed increasing. Countering this, however, are the simple controls. With the majority of minigames only using one or two buttons, you can solely focus on the rhythm, creating a gameplay loop that feels both accessible and endlessly replayable.

What Was That?

Levels are absurd, and I love it! Similar to WarioWare, each stage features some strange combination of characters, requiring you to time your button input with the sequence. As you play, visual tricks and camera shifts raise the challenge; for example, someone may block your view, or the camera will zoom onto a different object, forcing you to stay locked in on the beat to succeed. Although the gameplay is timing-driven, Nintendo manages to provide a ton of variety, which makes each moment a joy. From opening and closing your umbrella to catching food while preparing a meal, each task is a rhythm delight.

Culminating a series of levels is a unique track that combines previous tasks into one song. This can be quite tricky as you must remember the gimmicks from previous missions and apply them to the beat of a new song. Frantic and addictive, these challenge your timing and precision in a low-stakes, yet tense manner, which is an absolute joy to play.

At the end of each mini-game, your performance is ranked. If you do well enough, you can earn the ‘Amazing’ rating, receiving a medal for your efforts, which adds a real incentive to replay levels. As these are short, moreish stages, it makes it easy to jump back in and chase a higher rank without a significant time commitment.

Wait, There’s More!

Beatspell is an RPG-style mode that you can play alongside the main game. Here, you use your rhythm inputs to conjure spells and attack enemies. Although simple, it’s a nice spin on the format and is definitely a mode that you’ll dip into, even if it’s not your main focus. Its mechanics are surface-level, and while there’s freedom to perform certain skills, it lacks the depth seen in games of this ilk.

Topping off the single-player content is Drum Lessons, which does what it says on the tin, and the strangely enthralling quiz show, Who’s Got Rhythm. In this, you will encounter several rabbits clapping their ears. Some are perfectly in time with the beat, whereas others have a slight difference. You must decipher which rabbit is clapping its ears to the beat before the time runs out. Get it wrong and the time drops dramatically. While this isn’t a mode to spend hours on, it’s an enjoyable diversion from the main campaign.

Shifting focus to multiplayer options, Rhythm Heave Groove is perfect for gaming nights and family get-togethers. With a wonderful collection of competitive and co-operative minigames, each task leads to hilarity as you fail to perform simple tasks. Due to how simple and accessible the game is, those usually unwilling to pick up a controller need less convincing because of the simple premise and controls. Although the minigames differ, you will understand the objective almost immediately. With each stage including a small tutorial, this is sure to be a centrepiece at any gathering.

Simply Wonderful

Visually, the game leaps through a variety of styles, which adds to the strange eccentricity that imbues the game. From delightful, thick-lined cartoons to subtle, sepia designs, Nintendo showcases a spectrum of oddities that constantly amuse and bemuse. Any rhythm title needs a strong soundtrack, and you won’t be disappointed here. Songs are great, carrying a strong beat to support engagement. More impressive is the synergy between visuals and audio. Aspects animate in time with the music to signal the beat, helping you lock in to the tune. This harmony between sound and image transforms each level into a playful, almost hypnotic spectacle that’s hard to put down.

Rhythm Heaven Groove is weird and wonderful! Packed with character, each minigame delights with its unique take on the premise. This bleeds into the multiplayer experience, which is a highlight. Each activity brims with hilarity, leading to moments of joy. Due to the straightforward gameplay loop and simple controls, it’s extremely accessible, which encourages engagement from players of all skill levels, making it easy to pick up and endlessly entertaining. Put simply, it’s a blast!
