A Huge Win for Éalú
Limerick-based indie studio Beyond the Bark has picked up recognition for its debut title Éalú at the FÍS Games Summit 2026, earning the Best Experimental Game Runner Up award. Ardán presented the honor during its annual showcase, highlighting standout projects from across Ireland’s growing games scene.

Éalú stands out immediately for its distinctive approach as a point-and-click adventure. The game uses entirely hand-crafted stop-motion animation, giving it a tactile, old-school feel that’s rarely seen in modern releases. Inspired by the works of Lotte Reiniger and Jan Švankmajer, it plays out like an interactive silent film. Players guide a small clockwork mouse through a wooden labyrinth, solving puzzles while navigating an experience shaped by atmosphere rather than dialogue.
Beyond its visual identity, the game explores themes tied to algorithm-driven behavior and repetitive loops. This adds a thoughtful layer beneath its handcrafted design. That blend of artistic direction and conceptual depth makes it a natural fit for the experimental category.
The project also builds on previous work from the studio. Éalú acts as a spiritual successor to the music video for Tomcat Disposables by Will Wood, which was animated by Ivan Fisher-Owen. Wood returned to collaborate on the game’s score, delivering a soundtrack that enhances its silent-film tone.
With this recognition, Éalú not only marks a strong debut for Beyond the Bark but also signals the continued rise of bold, creative voices in the indie space. You can check out the game on Steam, where it is available for $14.99. Also, take a look at the gameplay trailer below to get a glimpse of its unique gameplay.
