Help the Wooden Mouse in Éalú
Beyond the Bark has announced that Éalú, its hand-animated stop-motion puzzle adventure, is now available on Steam. Crafted entirely by hand inside a garden shed, the game invites players into a haunting yet heartfelt world. Here, a wooden clockwork mouse dreams of escaping a maze to reach the outside world. Blending emotional, wordless storytelling with tactile artistry, Éalú stands out as a rare fusion of physical craftsmanship and interactive design. The game perfectly captures the charm of stop-motion film within a video game.

In Éalú, the Irish word for “escape,” players guide the mouse through a wooden labyrinth filled with puzzles, moments of discovery, and moral choices that test curiosity and compassion. The team brought every scene to life using real sets and props. They even captured more than 18,000 photographs to create over 500 animation clips. The mouse is also animated frame by frame without using a single digital sprite, giving the world a uniquely organic and personal feel.
Animator and conceptual designer Ivan Fisher-Owen describes Éalú as an “interactive silent film or symphony,” where lighting, music, and woodwork combine to evoke both wonder and unease. The game reflects on the nature of algorithmic loops, the patterns that influence behavior and emotion. As well as the human desire to break free from them.
Since its release, Éalú has been featured on RTÉ, streamed by French Twitch creator Recalbox, and praised by critics for its “unmatched stop-motion craftsmanship” (Heybox) and “beautiful, haunting” atmosphere (NoobFeed). GameBoomers called it “an engaging bit of puzzling,” celebrating its mix of artistry and depth.
