Carnholt Revealed as a Dark, Strategy-Driven Deckbuilder With a Twist

Hunt an Immortal God in Carnholt

Indie developer Maxime Minard has officially revealed Carnholt, a new roguelike that blends deckbuilding mechanics with tactical battlefield strategy. The game invites players into a decaying, ancient forest where the objective is as unusual as it is compelling: hunt down and repeatedly defeat a god that refuses to die.

At its core, Carnholt focuses on the interplay between deck construction and positioning. Players deploy creatures onto a battlefield, carefully planning their placement to overwhelm enemies. Fallen foes can then be scavenged to fuel powerful spells, adding another layer of strategy to each encounter.

A key feature is the companion system. Players choose a unique creature ally that accompanies them throughout their journey, shaping their playstyle with distinct abilities. Along the way, players can discover cards and relics that synergize with their companion, complete quests, and upgrade their units. The deeper players venture, the more corruption takes hold, introducing powerful yet dangerous abilities that can dramatically alter gameplay.

The narrative centers on a long-dead god who entered Carnholt to fade away but instead defied death itself. This unnatural existence has disrupted the balance of the world, and players must confront and defeat the god repeatedly until it finally yields to its fate. Along the way, they will encounter strange inhabitants and uncover the forest’s hidden truths.

Minard, known for his illustration work on Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons, developed Carnholt solo, drawing from five years of personal artwork to shape both its mechanics and visual identity.

With its distinctive art style and layered gameplay systems, Carnholt is shaping up to be a noteworthy entry in the roguelike genre. You can wishlist it right now on Steam to be among the first ones to experience it.
