What to play in 2025: the most anticipated video games

2025 promises to be much richer than the previous year in terms of major and notable releases. As usual, we can expect sequels to well-known series, reboots, and remakes — from DOOM and Civilization to Metal Gear and Gothic.

However, there will also be original projects from renowned developers, such as Judas, which is being worked on by one of the co-authors of BioShock.

Of course, the main release remains GTA VI — a project of such magnitude that many games on our list do not have exact release dates. After all, no one wants to compete with Rockstar’s flagship series.

Grand Theft Auto VI

What can be said about the most anticipated game not only of this year, but of the decade? Rockstar’s releases are becoming increasingly rare, but at the same time more important. Each of their new releases is expected to be a project that defines an entire generation of video games, a technological leap forward, and a benchmark for other developers to strive for.

Expectations for the sixth numbered installment of GTA are particularly high. This is the first game in the series in almost 10 years and the first Rockstar title to be released after the departure of Dan Houser, co-founder of the studio and creator of the franchise. For the first time in many years, one of the protagonists in GTA will be a woman. It is also the first game in the series since 2002 to be set in Vice City, a fan favorite based on Miami.

Will Rockstar Games live up to expectations? Or, against the backdrop of major changes in the company, the industry, and the world, and after a massive data leak from the studio in 2022, will the renowned developers miss the mark after all? We’ll see this year. Unless, of course, the game is postponed.

Metal Gear Solid ∆: Snake Eater

Konami continues its attempts to revive its main franchises. After the remake of Silent Hill 2, the next in line is an updated version of another cult game from the publisher — Metal Gear Solid 3, which many fans still consider the best in Hideo Kojima’s series about mercenaries, clones, wars, and global conspiracies.

Snake Eater is not only a fan favorite, but also the first installment in the Metal Gear series chronologically. Therefore, the remake of the prequel about operative Snake and his dangerous mission in the Siberian jungle (don’t ask) should be a great entry point even for those who are unfamiliar with the convoluted plot of the other games. MGS ∆ was supposed to be released in 2024, but they didn’t make it in time. Let’s hope the wait won’t be too long.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II

The sequel to the iconic RPG about medieval Bohemia. The first part was released back in 2018 and won over many with its complexity and carefully recreated, realistic world (among other things, you have to wash yourself in the game so as not to repel those around you, and teach the illiterate hero to read), but the plot was cut short.

Gothic Remake

The updated Gothic was expected in 2024, but the game will not be released until 2025. The cult German RPG will feature significant updates not only to the graphics but also to the gameplay. For example, you will be able to not only fry meat but also find recipes, cook food, and sell it to earn money. The narrative has also been expanded, so players will be able to learn more about orcs and, apparently, even work with them.

The developers are paying special attention to translating the game into different languages: the Gothic remake will be fully localized into Russian with subtitles and dubbing.
