Take Command In The Royal Writ
Save Sloth Studios, a Hungarian indie team, and UK-based publisher Yogscast Games have announced that The Royal Writ is arriving on PC via Steam on August 7. It is a lane-based deckbuilding strategy game set in the whimsical medieval kingdom of Aranfold. Take a look at the official release date trailer below to get a glimpse of the whimsical battles ahead.
The story begins when King Mikolt the Second sends a sharply worded decree to a troublesome Bandit Leader. Unsurprisingly, diplomacy fails, prompting the monarch to send in a ragtag army of lizards, bats, bugs, and other not-so-elite warriors.
The Royal Writ combines turn-based tactics with picture-book visuals and sharp humor. Battles play out across shifting lanes, one to three rows, where the goal is to reduce the enemy’s health to zero before they reach your base. Every decision counts: players must build a team using a limited deck, knowing that death is permanent and heroes rarely survive long.
Strategic planning is key, but so is creative thinking. Characters can be enhanced through quirky events like horse races or dental visits that grant useful relics and gear. Each environment poses hazards, too, from spike pits to mushroom fields, requiring careful adaptation.
The game’s charm lies in its unpredictable roster: ants that power up in swarms, vampire bats that steal gold and health, and a drunken frog named Gereb who grows stronger the closer he is to death. Players may bond with their units only to sacrifice them for loot when the time comes.
With multiple challenge modes and synergies to discover, The Royal Writ offers plenty of reasons to return again and again. Whether you value cunning strategy or comic misfortune, this deckbuilder ensures no two runs feel the same.
