Bandai Namco Wants To Create an IP Metaverse
Bandai Namco have announced that they are working on a metaverse project. This “IP Metaverse” is somehow for its entire library of games, and I don’t have any idea how that works. I do know they are spending a lot of money on it. They are currently putting around $130 million towards the project.
This Bandai Namco metaverse project has three goals: Connect Bandai Namco with fans of their games, enhance the value of Bandai Namco’s IP, and connect each IP’s world into an interconnected universe known as the “ALL BANDAI NAMCO concept.” It certainly sounds ambitious, but it remains unclear what exactly this all means.
Bandai Namco had this to share on their mid-term plan:
“Through the IP Metaverse, we will establish communities among Bandai Namco and fans, as well as among fans themselves. Through these communities and content, we will build deep, broad, multifaceted connections that continue for long periods of time, and we will focus on the quality of those connections. In this way, we will work to maximize IP value over the medium to long term.”
The metaverse has been a huge buzz work alongside crypto and NFTs. Will anything even resembling a metaverse come from this? I honestly doubt it. I don’t think there is much of an understanding of the metaverse.
I just hope this leads to good games. Like with NFTs, companies will be better when they drop trying to do all this extra stuff nobody asked for. I guess the future will tell if this ends up being a worthwhile venture.
