And It Looks Suitably Insane
The Resident Evil movies were trash. There’s no two ways around it. Sure, the first movie had its moments, and even the second movie work as an effective – if over the top – adaptation of Nemesis, but in the whole? They were trash. But they were fun trash. It was like seeing two clown cars speeding towards each other, doomed to collide: horrifying, but not something you can look away from.
Still, it’s easy to forget that Paul W. S. Anderson is a talented filmmaker. He directed Event Horizon, for one – one of the most horrifying films ever made in my opinion, and so violent that not only were scenes deleted to get an R rating, the deleted footage has been hidden away in what I can only assume is a Raiders of the Lost Ark style warehouse somewhere.
It’s also important to remember that studios care less about whether a film is good as much as they do about whether a film earns money, and his films have done that. The Resident Evil movies have earned over a billion dollars, and Anderson is working lightning will strike twice with his next video game adaptation, Monster Hunter, and if the teaser is anything to go by we’re in for a characteristically insane, over the top ride.

Unlike the films – which feature a customizable character hunting… well, monsters, the film instead focuses a team of soldiers led by Lt. Natalie Artemis (Milla Jovovich, the reigning queen of kick-ass) who get drawn into the Monster Hunter world, and forced to rely on a mysterious hunter to help them get back to Earth. The teaser shows what is presumably the event leading to them entering another world, with them facing a gigantic monster in the desert.
The trailer looks amazing, and although it might not be an objectively “good” film, it looks like it’ll be a fun one, which is good in its own way.
