Confusion over Cross-Generation Support for Xbox Games

You May Need to Buy the Xbox Series X for the New Games

On the heels of Xbox’s showcase and game announcements for Xbox Series X, there is much controversy around whether the games will be supported across both Xbox One and the new Xbox Series X. In the past, Xbox has said that the new games will playable on both Xbox One and Xbox Series X and we were reassured that we would not have to rush out and get a new gaming system to play the new games. This was welcome news given the current economic hardships caused by Covid 19.

However, many of the games in the showcase are listed as just supporting Xbox Series X, questioning if there really will be cross-generation support. When asked to clarify, Microsoft only shared a vague statement:

“Our future Xbox Game Studios titles are being developed natively for Xbox Series X. We will continue to invest in tools for devs to scale across consoles. Which consoles each Studio/game can support will be based on what’s best for their game and their community at launch.”

This is in direct contradiction to an earlier statement:

“We want every Xbox player to play all the new games from Xbox Game Studios. That’s why Xbox Game Studios titles we release in the next couple of years—like Halo Infinite—will be available and play great on Xbox Series X and Xbox One. We won’t force you to upgrade to Xbox Series X at launch to play Xbox exclusives.”

This development could hurt players’ trust in Xbox. It is important to note that the new Xbox games are also being released on PC. This makes me ask, why get an Xbox at all? If you can access the games on PC, and you do not have issues with cross-generation support for gaming, is an Xbox console really necessary?
