More Information about Rogue Company from Developer Showcase
First Watch Games is releasing Rouge Company across PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Switch today. They first gave us a sneak peek of the game in the Nintendo Direct mini today, but that was not all. More information and clips were released at the Developer Showcase on thegameawards YouTube channel.
Rogue Company is a third-person shooter game that blends action gameplay with tactical shooting. The most exciting thing about this game is that it offers cross-play and cross-progression. This means that you can play the game on any platform with your friends. I think that this is an amazing feature that I hope to see more developers embrace. Scott Lussier, from First Watch Games, said “it’s one of the worst experiences of all time, trying to figure out what platform your friends are playing on and if you can play with them”. Hyperbole aside, First Watch Games is clearly demonstrating their player first mentality with this game, which is sometimes lacking in other companies.
To support cross-play across platforms, the development team had to make the game 60 frames per seconds on all the platforms. This includes the Nintendo Switch, even in handheld mode. Equalizing the framerate ensured that everyone had the same gameplay experience. This is no easy task!
We also got a bit more information about the playable characters. Two rogue characters were featured in a trailer. The rogues are people that can go where the government can’t, to get jobs done, and get paid. I am surprised that these characters were not featured in the Nintendo Direct mini announcement. The character story clip was a compelling mix of action and humor, which is always a winning combination. They did not mention if there is much of a storyline for the game, but given the cutscene previewed, I would expect some story.
