“His Story Comes to a Close”
Among the many PlayStation exclusives revealed during the PS5 event yesterday comes the announcement trailer for the next Resident Evil game. Resident Evil 8 aka Resident Evil Village, with the VIII cleverly snuck into the title, appears to be a direct sequel to Resident Evil 7. As the producers Tsuyoshi Kanda and Peter Fabiano mentioned in their announcement following the reveal trailer, this takes place a few years after Resident Evil 7 and Ethan returns to have his world turned upside down again. The announcement trailer opens with the words “His story comes to a close” which may be referring to Ethan or Chris Redfield, who also makes an appearance.
The opening to the trailer also contains a story of a young girl getting lost in the woods, which is no doubt some form of foreshadowing. The game appears to continue from the “good ending” of Resident Evil 7 where the player chooses to cure Mia instead of Zoe, as Mia is still alive at the beginning of Resident Evil Village. Spoiler: that does not last too long. Chris arrives and executes her in front of Ethan, kicking off the main events of the game.
A glimpse at the inventory shows that the currency being used is leu (plural lei), which suggests that the game takes place in Romania. A symbol that the producers showed off looks like a mutated embryo surrounded by a ring, bramble, and crow wings. This image is also shown in the reveal trailer and some speculate that it is a G-Embryo. There are many questions that we have, but we will have to wait until there is more information. Resident Evil Village is expected to come out for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X in 2021.
