Because We All Wanted a Pong-Themed Hotel Room
Atari has made an impact on video games in a way that no one else will, probably ever. But lately, like the last 30 years, they have kind of lost steam. Going from making one of the first video games ever to anything else is bound to feel like a shortcoming. However, Atari’s next big step is into the real-world. Introducing… Atari Hotels? Let’s hear them out. Earlier today, Atari announced that they would be building Atari hotels in the United States, starting in Phoenix, Arizona.
The project is being led by GSD Group founder Shelley Murphy and partner Napoleon Smith III. Smith said, “When creating this brand-new hotel concept, we knew that Atari would be the perfect way to give guests the ‘nostalgic and retro meets modern’ look and feel we were going for. Let’s face it, how cool will it be to stay inside an Atari?!” What these hotels appear to offer is actually much cooler than Smith makes it sound.
The description on the home page says, “Atari Hotels level up hotel entertainment with fully immersive experiences for every age and gaming ability, including the latest in Virtual and Augmented Reality. Select hotels will also feature state-of-the-art venues and studios to accommodate esports events.” VR and AR? The Hilton doesn’t have that. They just have an heiress with a sextape. Atari Hotels will begin construction in mid-2020.
