Sony to Launch its own “Spider-Verse”
After some very public dealings, it seems as though Spider-Man is officially not returning to the MCU.
Disney and Sony have been fighting over the character for a few weeks, but talks fell apart between Marvel boss Kevin Feige and Sony CEO Tony Vinciquerra. Disney tried to get the public on their side by taking to social media but Sony is refusing to budge. The two companies failed to reach an agreement and Spider-Man’s future remained unknown.
However, at the Variety Technology and Entertainment summit, Vinciquerra made an official statement on Spider-Man’s future. Vinciquerra said: “We had a great run with (Feige) on Spider-Man movies. We tried to see if there’s a way to work it out….the Marvel people are terrific people, we have great respect for them, but on the other hand we have some pretty terrific people of our own. Kevin didn’t do all the work.”
After the success of the Spider-Man films within the MCU, many fans were disappointed that Spidey wasn’t returning. But, Vinciquerra has promised there will be more films from the Spider-Verse, and even some television series. Sony’s other Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was met with critical acclaim so the franchise’s future is most likely in good hands.
Sony plans to release a second Venom film along with several television series set in the Spider-Verse. Vinciquerra is confident on the character’s ability to stand on its own outside a cinematic universe. “Spider-Man was fine before the event movies, did better with the event movies, and now that we have our own universe, he will play off the other characters as well,” Vinciquerra said. “I think we’re pretty capable of doing what we have to do here.”
For now, it seems like Sony is planning to release a ton of Spider-Man content, we just won’t see Peter next to Captain Marvel.
