Nintendo Switch Worldwide Sales Still Trailing Behind PS4
According to the latest sales figures data reported by Famitsu, the Nintendo Switch has already sold more units in Japan than the lifetime sales of Sony’s PlayStation 4. Let’s break it down, shall we?
As per the report (thanks Kotaku), Nintendo’s little hybrid console has sold 8,125,637 units in Japan since it launched worldwide on March 3rd, 2017. The PS4’s current lifetime total in Japan comes to 8,077,756.
Considering how much of a lead the PS4 has had in the Japanese market — it launched February 22nd, 2014 — the Switch’s sales dominance is not short of impressive. Keep in mind that these numbers only correlate to Japan, not other countries. Despite this, however, worldwide sales of the Switch sit roughly at 34.7 million, a far cry from the PS4’s worldwide total of around 90 million. Even when you factor these numbers in, the Switch’s overall performance is still very strong.
It’s hard to say if the Switch will outsell the PS4 in worldwide sales in less time, but with numbers like this, it certainly is possible.
Japan’s video game market tends to skew more towards mobile and portable gaming anyway, so it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that the Switch has outperformed the PS4 in just over two years. That isn’t to downplay the console’s success, just an observation.
