The Best Video Game Surprise of 2018
At the start of 2018, we expected to have a pretty great year in gaming. On top of the titles we anticipated most, there were also a number of games that popped up and blew us away beyond our wildest expectations. For COGconnected’s Game of the Year awards, we’ve ranked the games that pleasantly surprised us the most. Click on our video below to see our list of the best video game surprises of 2018.
By far, our favorite surprise from 2018 is Celeste, an indie platformer that takes the classic genre and turns it on its head with beautiful imagery and a powerful story. At first glance, the 2D retro platforming scheme seemed like a thing that had been done a thousand times, but this game exceeded our expectations in so many different ways. The simplicity of the mechanics but creativity of the changing puzzles makes for a truly memorable, challenging and exceptional little game.
Our second place pick goes to another game that takes one of the oldest gaming concepts and makes it fresh and exciting, Tetris Effect. Tetris Effect reinvents the wheel in the most fantastic way possible, with vibrant and colorful visual effects and focused gameplay that challenges for hours on end, and this was one of the most welcomed surprises of the year. Some of the other games that surprised us and blew us away were Moonlighter, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, and Dead Cells.
