Over 200 In The UK Alone
I’ve heard that line about playing too many videogames my entire life, but I never believed it would be enough to end a marriage. Apparently I was way off base, as something like 200 divorces in the UK were filed in 2018 with addiction to Fortnite and other games as their reason for occurring.
According to Divorce Online, “roughly 5 percent of the 4,665 petitions we have handled since the beginning of the year” are filed thanks to gaming addiction. If Fortnite is so good that couples are breaking up because of it, clearly I’m the fool for never playing it. Or maybe I’ve dodged a bullet.
This isn’t to make light of gaming addiction itself. The condition is quite serious. For all the healthy gamers one meets, there’s always at least one who’s taken their hobby, their passion to a place they can’t control. Online games and the total saturation of social media mean that we’re more aware than ever about this new disorder slipping through our society. If you’re choosing games like Fortnite over sex, food, fun and real connections, perhaps some professional assistance is in order. Remember, there’s no shame in seeking help, no matter what the problem may be.
