Dark Souls: Remastered First Week of Sales Are In
When Dark Souls: Remastered was announced some time ago, players were pretty excited. Fans of the Souls series were overjoyed to hear about the original games remaster treatment and it has now arrived across all platforms, ready to take that masochistic love of frustration to the next level with enhanced and updated graphics. Unfortunately, the first week of sales for the remaster across all platforms have been less than stellar.
The numbers are in and the action RPG from publisher Bandai Namco and developer FromSoftware sold 231,158 units first week at retail on consoles. This according to VGChartz estimates.
VGChartz broke down the sales by platform. The game sold best on the PlayStation 4 with 207,060 units sold (90%), compared to 24,098 units sold on the Xbox One (10%). They report:
“Breaking down the sales by region, the game sold best in Japan with 78,523 units sold (34%), compared to 64,181 units sold in Europe (28%) and 52,650 units sold in the US (23%). Looking more closely at Europe, the game sold an estimated 15,247 units in the UK, 14,779 units in Germany, and 8,632 units in France. It was also reported the game sold also sold 54,306 digital units in Japan in its first four days.”
Dark Souls Remastered is an updated and enhanced version of the original game from 2011. Players take the role of a prisoner cursed with undeath, breaking free and exploring a world plunged into darkness and death. Rather than tell a specific narrative, the game leaves clues and lore and for the player to determine what happened for themselves, even limiting communication between players. The core mechanic of the game revolves around exploration of the world and collecting souls. The game is synonymous with refined combat, requiring near perfect timing to survive. Dark Souls Remastered also employs a model of trial and error, often times seeing players fall to their enemies dozens of times as they learn their attack pattern. It is widely considered one of the most challenging and rewarding series to date.
Dark Souls: Remastered released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC on May 24 in Japan and May 25 in North America and Europe. It will launch for the Nintendo Switch in the third quarter of 2018.
