Cory Barlog Releases Emotional Video on God of War’s Launch Day
It’s easy to forget how much work, love, and sacrifice goes into making video games. With God of War, which is out today on PS4, developer Sony Santa Monica worked on the critically-acclaimed action game for over five years. In a touching tribute, game director Cory Barlog uploaded an emotional video of his immediate reaction to the game’s glowing review scores. Grab a tissue before watching, you’re gonna need it.
“So, I thought a lot about whether or not to upload but then I thought of what my son, Helo, is going through right now,” Barlog wrote in the YouTube description. “He doesn’t want us to be around when he is sad, opting to run in another room and yell at us if we try to come in. It has been important to us to let him know that it is OK to be sad, it is OK to cry. There is nothing to hide. I thought I would try to set a good example and show him that papa can cry in front of the world, or at least the 50 people who end up watching this. 🙂 This is for you, Helo. Papa loves you.”
“I’m really trying to stall as much as possible because I am very nervous about seeing this,” Barlog admits at the beginning of the video. “It is a long, long, long time coming. Five years of work has gone into this game, so this moment means a lot.”
We’ll admit, we teared up a bit watching Barlog’s reaction video and we think it’s a wonderful reminder to all gamers of the gruelling and difficult work that goes into making our favourite video games. Barlog, who is usually so calm and cool during interviews, is clearly overwhelmed with tears of happiness after seeing the game’s Metacritic score before composing himself to say that “[The review scores] shouldn’t matter but I’m just so f*cking proud.”
“I’m not going to bullsh*t you, I was f*cking freaked out man. I guess I didn’t want to believe that others would see it as we saw it, so that’s just awesome. I guess it means I don’t know sh*t,” he joked. “Sometimes a crazy idea can make something special.”
Barlog doesn’t call out any specific reviews but we hope he was able to read our review. Good job, Mr Barlog. You deserve all the praise.
