Five Nights at Freddy’s Movie Project Finally Getting Off the Ground
It’s been up in the air for years but it now seems that a Five Nights at Freddy’s movie is actually going forward. Even stranger still, reports from Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter have confirmed that director Chris Columbus will be writing and directing the video game adaptation. Yeah, the guy that directed the first two Harry Potter movies, Home Alone, and…uh…Pixels?
The film is being produced by Blumhouse Productions, the same production house behind other horror films like Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and the critically-acclaimed Get Out. Blumhouse landed the rights for the movie after studio founder Jason Blum won the allegiance of game creator Shawn Cawthon. Cawthon and Blum will serve as producers on the film.
A tweet from Blumhouse confirmed Chris Columbus’ involvement with the below photo:

While Chris Columbus has been known for making family-friendly films, he also has a long history writing spooky screenplays like Gremlins, The Goonies, and Young Sherlock Holmes. It will be interesting to see his approach to translating a video game to the big screen.
The original Five Nights at Freddy’s was released in 2014 where it became an instant YouTube hit. It is set at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, a sort of dark and twisted version of Chuck E. Cheese. There are six games in total in the series. The franchise has also generated a series of bestselling novels and tons of merchandise items.
