E3 2016: ‘Project Scorpio’ Is a Beefy New Xbox Coming Next Fall

The VR Ready, 4K Capable Xbox One Will Be Most Powerful Console

Microsoft released the details of the next Xbox code named ‘Project Scorpio’ today at their E3 briefing. It will be able to handle virtual reality, handle 4K games and pack a whopping six teraflops of power, this will make Project Scorpio the most powerful system on the market when it releases next fall.

Xbox Chief Phil Spencer shared his thoughts on the new Xbox on which he told The Verge in an interview last week.

“The important thing for Scorpio is that it’s a dramatic step up for us in terms of hardware capability,” he said. “Because as we saw 4K gaming and really high-end VR taking off in the PC space, we wanted to be able to bring that to console. Project Scorpio is actually an Xbox One that can natively run games in 4K and is built with the hardware capabilities to support the high-end VR that you see happening in the PC space today… when it ships it will be the most powerful console ever built.”

Every model of the Xbox One will be able to play the same library of games, but in the case of the originial Xbox where in certain games it would have to drop the resolution to maintain a steady frame-rate, that won’t be the case for Scorpio which will be able to run every game at maximum potential consistently.

Microsoft has been in talks with Occulus to bring their Occulust Rift platform to the Xbox One but no solid agreement has been met yet. This would obviously be worked in with the release of Project Scorpio.

Along with the announcement came the 40% slimmer, 2TB Xbox One S which will release in August. Stay tuned for more E3 coverage as COGconnected continues to provide info.
