Monarchs at Play Brings Quick 4X Strategy to PC With a New Steam Demo

Build Your Empire in Monarchs at Play

Indie developers Eric and Emanuel have officially released the Monarchs at Play demo on Steam, giving strategy fans a streamlined take on the classic 4X genre. Inspired by games like Civilization, TerraScape, and The Settlers of Catan, the upcoming title condenses empire-building into matches that last around 60 minutes.

In Monarchs at Play, players begin by placing their palace and founding a new kingdom. From there, every turn opens new strategic opportunities as they explore the map, expand cities, unlock stronger buildings, and create powerful adjacency bonuses that maximize resource production. The goal is simple: earn the most Glory by building the most efficient empire.

The game also lets players choose between diplomacy and conquest. You can trade with rival kingdoms, wage war to expand your territory, or compete against friends in multiplayer matches. It also features a variety of procedurally generated maps and challenges.

The newly released demo includes a complete one-hour 4X match, three tutorial missions, and a guided introduction for new players. It also features Classic Mode with randomized maps and Challenge Mode, where players can tackle three handcrafted missions and compete for high scores. The demo offers more than 50 buildings to construct and two playable monarchs. Each has unique abilities and exclusive structures.

With its fast-paced format and strong focus on strategic city planning, Monarchs at Play looks like a promising option for players who want the depth of 4X games without committing to lengthy campaigns.
