DeckTerra Is Here to Bring a Change
Fans of historical strategy games looking for something that won’t require an entire afternoon to finish may want to keep an eye on DeckTerra. Indie developer Murray Smith has released a new gameplay trailer for the upcoming 4X strategy game, which combines traditional empire-building with deck-building mechanics.
The new trailer gives players a closer look at the cards that shape each game, while highlighting the strategic choices involved in building and managing an empire. DeckTerra is designed around a faster multiplayer experience, with full online matches expected to take less than an hour.
As players progress through different historical eras, they will compete for resources and territory while managing food, production, technology, and religious power. Cards play a central role in this process, allowing players to develop strategies that fit their empire and adapt to changing situations.
Technology is also crucial, with schools, archives, and laboratories helping civilizations advance through the technology tree and unlock increasingly powerful military units. Players can ultimately pursue scientific, religious, or military victory, giving each match multiple possible paths to success.
DeckTerra takes inspiration from both Civilization and deckbuilding games such as Slay the Spire, but its biggest goal is to make multiplayer 4X less time-consuming. Smith explained that lengthy turns and waiting for opponents in traditional 4X games inspired the card-based system.
The DeckTerra demo is now available on Steam, giving strategy fans a chance to see how its faster approach to 4X works for themselves.
With its mix of familiar empire-building and streamlined multiplayer, DeckTerra could offer a refreshing alternative for players who love 4X games but don’t always have hours to spare.
