Become a Legless Mimic in Jump Broke
Indie developer YXGame Studio has released an updated demo and fresh trailer for Jump Broke as part of the ongoing Steam Next Fest. The game stands out with a clever twist on platforming: every jump costs a gold coin. Players take control of a legless mimic that moves by blasting coins into the ground and riding the recoil upward. This turns even the simplest movement into a constant risk-versus-reward decision.
This latest demo introduces two major systems that add more depth to that core idea. First is Mona, a quirky succubus creditor full of personality who keeps a close eye on the player’s finances. Alongside her is the new Charm System, which dynamically changes gameplay depending on how many coins the player has.
The system splits players into two distinct play styles. Those struggling with debt fall into the Deficit Build, where Mona offers a safety net through helpful charms that recover lost coins or reduce the impact of dangerous falls. On the other hand, players who manage to build up a surplus unlock the Surplus Build. They gain access to high-risk abilities like a powerful double jump that sacrifices base jump height, ideal for speedrunners chasing efficiency.
With its clean pixel art, smooth frame-by-frame animation, and a soundtrack by Scarlet Moon’s Frank van ’t Ende, Jump Broke focuses on precision and responsiveness. The result is a platformer that feels both punishing and rewarding, depending on how well players manage their resources. It’s a simple idea with a surprisingly sharp edge, and one that makes every climb feel personal.
