Time to Enter A Dark Cave
A mysterious cave, a tiny fire, and no memory of who you are. That’s where A Dark Cave begins, and players can experience its dark, text-driven village-building adventure through a free demo during Steam Next Fest, running from October 19 to 26, 2026.
Developed by solo creator Julian Bauer, A Dark Cave blends incremental progression with village management, exploration, and combat. The game starts with players waking up at the entrance of a cave, with little more than a fire to keep the darkness at bay. From there, it’s up to them to gather wood, craft tools, recruit villagers, and slowly turn a struggling settlement into something more.
But there’s a bigger mystery waiting beneath the surface. As players venture deeper into the cave, they will uncover the secrets of a lost civilization and discover more about the world surrounding them.
Rather than relying on flashy visuals, A Dark Cave keeps things minimalist, letting its writing, gameplay systems, and eerie atmosphere do the heavy lifting. Players can manage their settlement at their own pace while making important decisions, exploring new areas, and fighting threats along the way.
If you’ve enjoyed games like A Dark Room, Kittens Game, or Universal Paperclips, this one might be worth checking out. The game is also free to play in a web browser on desktop and mobile devices.
A Dark Cave launches on Windows via Steam on October 27, 2026, just one day after Steam Next Fest ends. With its intriguing premise and mysterious underground world, the demo could be the perfect excuse to lose yourself in a cave for a while. Just don’t expect to come out with all the answers.
