Warena Invites Players to Steam Playtest From 17 to 19 April

Join the Battle in Warena

Indie developer Part Time Monkey, along with publisher Coyote Time Publishing, has announced an upcoming open playtest for its real-time tactical card battler Warena. The test will run from April 17 to April 19 on Steam, with players able to request access directly through the game’s store page.

Warena blends real-time strategy with card-based mechanics in a competitive 1v1 format where both players act simultaneously. Instead of turn-based pacing, matches unfold in real time as players deploy units, cast spells, and push toward the enemy base. Success depends heavily on mana management, quick decision-making, and precise counter-timing, resulting in fast and dynamic battles.

A key element of the game is its evolving deckbuilding system. During matches, players unlock new cards, units, and abilities through Runes, allowing strategies to shift on the fly. Before each match begins, players also select Hero Skills that define their overall approach, creating varied playstyles and forcing opponents to adapt accordingly.

For those looking to sharpen their skills before jumping into PvP, Warena includes a full single-player campaign designed to introduce core mechanics and tactics. Notably, the game avoids pay-to-win elements, with all cards available to unlock through regular gameplay.

The project is led by Tuomas Erikoinen, best known for his work on early Angry Birds titles during his time at Rovio Entertainment. With its mix of real-time action and strategic depth, Warena’s upcoming playtest offers a promising glimpse into its competitive potential. So, what are you waiting for? Go ahead and sign up for the playtest right now.
