Enter the Brutal World of Swordeye
The latest playtest for Swordeye, the melee-focused MMO from solo developer ALX Theory, is now live, opening its doors to a wider group of players on Steam. Formerly known as Swordai, the game continues to evolve with a major update that introduces a fully realized 3D open-world experience alongside new gameplay systems.
At the center of this update is the newly added Overworld, a large open map designed to bring MMO-style exploration into Swordeye’s directional combat system. Players can roam freely, gather resources, and build their loadouts with dual-handed swords, protective amulets, and crafting materials. The Overworld also features regular combat-driven world events, including large-scale defenses where players must protect a central keep from waves of NPC enemies targeting key structures.
Risk and reward play a key role in progression. Areas closer to the central keep offer safer gameplay with basic loot, while venturing into distant zones increases both danger and potential rewards. Players who fall in these high-risk regions will lose their gear, adding tension to every encounter. The map also connects to Swordeye’s dungeon system through portals, allowing players to enter a massive tower filled with tougher enemies, rival players, and increasingly valuable loot as they climb higher floors.
This playtest also introduces proximity voice chat, encouraging teamwork during battles and events. Additional features such as jump pads, hidden keys, and locked chests further expand exploration. With nearly 20 hours of content, this marks Swordeye’s biggest playtest yet.
