Echoes of Agony Begins Hunting Demons With the Launch of Alpha Demo

Start Your Pursuit in Echoes of Agony

Indie studio Apocrypha has launched the alpha demo for Echoes of Agony on itch.io, marking a major step forward in the development of its dark, turn-based roguelite. The demo offers players an early look at the game’s core systems, including its distinctive turn economy and the bold “Greed is the Difficulty Slider” mechanic that shapes every encounter.

Echoes of Agony

Inspired by Path of Exile: Delirium, Quasimorph, and Darkest Dungeon, Echoes of Agony casts players into a grim struggle against their own inner demons. Every decision carries weight, forcing players to balance ambition against survival. Push too hard, and the consequences can be devastating. Play too cautiously, and enemies may overwhelm you before you can finish them off.

Combat revolves around a dynamic stamina system. Stamina regenerates outside of turns, and once a character’s stamina bar fills, they act while all other regeneration pauses. Players can spend as much stamina as they like during their turn, performing multiple actions before ending it. However, the more stamina they consume, the longer it takes before their next turn arrives. Acting conservatively allows for quicker recovery, but may sacrifice offensive momentum.

In a desperate gamble, players can even dip into negative stamina once per turn to squeeze out an additional action, adding another layer of risk-versus-reward strategy.

The alpha demo focuses purely on testing and refining these combat mechanics. It does not include meta-progression systems, as the team prioritizes feedback and iteration on the game’s tactical foundation.
