Shape the World in Echoes of the Unread
As the Kickstarter campaign for Echoes of the Unread enters its final days, Mega Cat Studios and Clever Cat Games have released the last chapter of their developer video blog series. This closing entry shifts focus from technical achievements to the emotional roots of the game’s narrative.

Game creator Matt Tuttle shares how his experience during the COVID-19 lockdowns shaped the story. Feelings of isolation heavily influenced the game’s core themes, leading to the creation of protagonists Rhapsody and the mysterious magician Odele. Both characters are trapped in an eerie library and yearn for escape, reflecting a desire for freedom that resonated deeply during the pandemic.
The latest video also highlights a cast of unique characters Rhapsody will encounter in her journey through magical storybook realms. Players can expect to meet Mavis, a wise librarian; Serenade, a mesmerizing mermaid; and Nocturne, a vampire who roams a haunted graveyard with his loyal dog, Fang. Each character adds to the game’s richly imagined world, created specifically for the NES’s 8-bit hardware.
Echoes of the Unread reached its funding goal within 24 hours, but two stretch goals remain, aimed at bringing the game to Nintendo Switch and Steam. The campaign ends Monday, June 16.
