Yesterday, developer Evening Star announced a new game coming out next year. Penny’s Big Breakaway certainly has a novel concept. It is a 3D platformer where your main tool is a yo-yo. Basically every 90s kid’s dream. This will be Evening Star’s first title, published by Private Division.
The premise of the game appears to be that Penny has angered Emperor Eddie with her yo-yo. He sends his penguin army after her and she needs to escape and clear her name.
Visually, Penny’s Big Breakaway is reminiscent of Katamari Damacy. The locations are full of vibrant colors and interesting shapes. There are also different sections where the camera orientation is fixed, like in a 3D Mario game.

What is the most charming and interesting thing about the game is the versatility of Penny’s yo-yo. It can be used to swing through the air, around objects, and more. Penny can ride on the ground, on walls, and on zip-lines. There are also ways to upgrade it to unlock more abilities.
Of course, there are ways to use the yo-yo offensively. Penguins will swarm Penny, as well as combine into bigger threats. Penny can knock them out with her trusty yo-yo and break other obstacles in her way.
There is a story mode, where Penny adventures to clear up a grand mix up. The game also has a Time Attack mode for those with a need for speed. Penny’s Big Breakaway will be coming out in early 2024, but has no specific release date. It will be available on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
