The Nintendo Switch’s Crusade has Begun
The success of the Nintendo Switch is no secret. It’s quickly reached heights above any Xbox console; spoken of in the same breath as the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo DS. It’s not yet reached complete world dominance though – the PlayStation 2 reigns supreme.
For now. The ancient PS2 is a sleeping giant, its conquest long past, its power spoken of only in myths (and extremely nerdy basements). Eventually, someone will fill that void. Someone.
France. 2023. January. It’s a day like any other, with people enjoying the new year, hopeful for what it may bring. And then they arrive.
Clad in reds and blues, and with a core of pure black, the console invades from Nintendo’s HQ. This is their first assault, a test run for what they hope to achieve in nation after nation. The French folk come to love their new overlords.
The Nintendo Switch is now France’s best-selling video game console of all time, sitting at 7.09 million units sold. A quarter of all French households now include the console.
If you’re curious as to what’s driving those sales, some added stats can show us where French interest lies. Here’s the top 8 best-selling games from the country:
- Pokémon Scarlet & Violet (701,000 units) (wow!)
- Pokémon Arceus (575,000)
- Mario Kart 8 (445,000)
- Nintendo Switch Sports (425,000)
- Mario Strikers (264,000)
- Splatoon 3 (254,000)
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons (253,000)
- Kirby and the Forgotten Land (214,000)
I literally have one on my desk as I’m writing this, you know. I keep seeing it in the corner of my eye, beckoning me back to Pokémon Violet, daring me to fuel its plans for world domination.
But I’m just one person, one cog in Nintendo’s eternal war machine. Where do you stand? Can anyone ever dethrone the PlayStation 2? Let your voice be heard in the comments down below!
