Age of Empires 4 Will be Free to Play for a Limited Time

Age of Empires will Soon Be Free!

The last 25 years have been the Age of Age of Empires, and the developers have something special planned for this quarter-century anniversary. An “Anniversary Update” will reach the game soon, but for now, Relic Entertainment is looking to invite more people to the party. Starting this weekend, Age of Empires 4 will be totally free! It’ll only stay that way for a week, though, and when time’s up, the free game goes with it. If you want to play the game after that, you’ll have to buy it.

What’ll stay free forever, though, is the coming update. If you own Age of Empires 4, the update and everything within will be all yours. It’ll bring two new playable factions to the table: the Ottomans and the Malians. One leans heavily on military might, while the other will let you flex your economic dominance. Which path will you choose?

The update also has a few other goodies in store – nothing quite as fantastical, but still equally relevant. New maps and achievements, ranked play, some extra taunts, and more.

Everything can and will be found though the PC gaming marketplace: Steam. While rumors abound surrounding a console release for the Xbox, this celebration won’t make it over there either way.

Will you be taking advantage of the free fun? Do you see yourself sticking around to play with the update’s content? How do you think a move like this will impact the Age of Empires community? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments down below!
