The 5th Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Game Is Also Modern Warfare 2

There Will Be Two Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Games in the Series

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be the new name for this year’s CoD entry. Fans of the franchise have already been well aware that the next game is going to be a successor to 2019’s Modern Warfare. However, no one expected Infinity Ward to use the same title of the 2009 entry.

Modern Warfare’s launch confused fans after it mimicked the name of 2007’s CoD game that kicked off its popularity. Now, it seems that devs are going to keep up with the effect with the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. After all, its identical twin is Modern Warfare 2 from 2009.

5th call of duty game called modern warfare 2

The last Modern Warfare is one of the community’s fan-favorites. Still, it has not kept fans from being confused. Now, there are two different sequels that have the same exact name.

Many fans assumed that Infinity Ward marketed themselves into a corner after they named the first reboot. Slapping a “2” on the title is an effective method of informing fans that the game is a direct followup to the previous one. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2-2 might not be too confusing to fans who have kept up with the series. Still, it is bound to cause a bit of a headache somewhere down the road. After all, the CoD series is quite known for zig-zagging between three concurrent sub-series.

It does not help that the new Modern Warfare series is absolutely different from the original trilogy that ended in 2011. 2019’s Modern Warfare does not follow the 2007 original at all. Its only actual connections to the game come from the devs’ decision to pluck recognizable names such as Gaz and Captain Price. Devs gave these names to a set of completely new characters that new actors played.
