Epic Games Acquires Marketplace and Music Community, Bandcamp
Acquisitions by major video game companies have been the topic of 2022. Thus far, we’ve seen some major acquisitions and today, Bandcamp has announced that it has joined Epic Games. Epic Games is known for its store, Fortnite and as the creators of the Unreal Engine. Bandcamp is a standalone marketplace and music community that offers fans and musicians a ton of benefits. The acquisition will benefit both parties to the deal.
Ethan Diamond, Bandcamp’s CEO and co-founder, issued a press release concerning the deal. Firstly, the music and services that fans love will remain on the product and the focus will be an artists-first revenue model. Secondly, Bandcamp Fridays will continue as planned and users will have control over their music. However, behind the scenes, Epic Games will allow the company to expand internationally and push its developments.
Some of the features that may improve include album pages, mobile apps, merch tools, search and discovery system and the payment system. There will also be newer initiatives such as vinyl pressing and live streaming services. The extra capital from Epic Games will allow the team to improve their product for users!
Diamond noted that Epic Games was a perfect fit for the company, as it ticked all the boxes. In closing, Diamond stated, “Whether you joined Bandcamp recently or have been with us since the beginning 14 years ago, thank you for being a part of this incredible community, and we look forward to serving you for many years to come!”
