From Microsoft the Sony
Sony has a lot to celebrate today. Today is the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII, a new State of Play centered around Gran Turismo 7 will be held in a couple of days, and they just announced a big purchase. Bungie, best known for creating Halo and Destiny, will become a part of the Sony family.
You may recall that Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard earlier this month, but don’t think that this is a “response” to that. Deals like these take months, not weeks. They do share similarities, such as the workplace harassment issues both companies have faced. A real “I think I can fix him” vibe about the two, but again, not related.
Sony announced the acquisition of Bungie earlier today. If you are concerned that Destiny will become a PlayStation exclusive, rest assured that they intend to keep it as a multiplatform title, as per their statement.
After passing Halo off to 343 Industries, Destiny has kind of become Bungie’s only high-profile title. Unless they start coming up with more heavy hitting franchises, it makes sense that they continue releasing on multiple platforms. That being said, their resources have vastly increased with Sony as a partner.
We should note that it was just a couple of months ago that Phil Spencer commented on Microsoft’s split with Bungie. He had expressed some regret in letting them go, but harbors no hard feelings.
With Bungie now a subsidiary of Sony, what do you expect from them? Let us know in the comments below.
