Overview of Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga Gamescom Trailer

More Light Shed on Major Gameplay Improvements

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has just received its first trailer in over a year during gamescom, and it looks amazing.  With a massively overhauled gameplay system, the game will feature an open world, aiming, and maybe even a combat system.

First off, the trailer highlights a few boss battles.  The emphasis seems to be lightsaber combat: Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon Jinn’s duel with Darth Maul, Obi-Wan and Anakin’s duel with Count Dooku, and Obiwan’s duel on Mustafar with Anakin.  It is hoped that with the major focus on lightsaber combat in the trailer, the boss fights will be upgraded from scripted events and somewhat simple combat to duel mechanics.

In addition, more of the shooting system is explored.  It seems as if the majority of blaster combat will feature normal third party shooting.  This should be a step up from the solely-cover based shooting of Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens, where you would be forced to remain stationary while shooting.  In addition, there will be breakable cover for you and enemies to hide behind.

The open world system seems to meet expectations for the scale of the Star Wars franchise.  You can travel from planets such as Utapau and Bespin to some of the sequel planets like D’Qar and Kijimi.  In addition, there seems to be some mystery planets not yet revealed by the trailer – perhaps from the Clone Wars TV show.

Fans of the original game will be pleased to know that the Lego trademark humor is still intact, although there will be voice acting.  In terms of minor additional gameplay improvements, you can equip jetpacks and take on parkour challenges to get reward bricks.  The game will release next year during Spring – so taking a reasonable guess, the game will possibly release on May the 4th.
