New DLC Brings Assassin’s Creed to the Emerald Isle
Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla is going to Ireland in the upcoming Wrath of the Druids DLC. The expansion will continue the story of Eivor and expand the Norse mythology found in the base game, but it will also incorporate rich Gaelic myths and folklore. The lush green shores of Ireland are filled with mystery and danger, both supernatural all too real. In all seriousness, there is a metric ton of cool stuff that could potentially surface in this DLC, from the age-old historical struggle between Ireland and England to scary Irish faeries, so we’re very glad that Ubisoft Bordeaux associate narrative director Hugo Sahuquet talked with The Gamer about what we can expect to see in Wrath of the Druids.
First: Wrath of the Druids will see Eivor team up with Barid mac Imair, king of Dublin, a remarkably cosmopolitan city for the time. When the Wrath of the Druids begins, the Vikings have already given up conquering Ireland, but that doesn’t mean they’ve left the island. In fact, they’ve started putting down roots.
“…the Vikings focused on doing business with the Irish and were quite commonly used by Irish kings as mercenaries of war,” Sahuquet said. “In fact, it is recorded that Flann Sinna, High King of Ireland and another main character of the expansion, had Vikings join his war campaigns. Which is the start of our story.”
That’s definitely an interesting jumping-off point. The High King of Ireland recruiting Eivor and company to fight for him? It’s interesting to imagine the Vikings actually teaming up with another culture instead of just raiding and colonizing. But who knows, maybe they’ll bond over fighting the English.
Wrath of the Druids will launch on April 29th, 2021.
