In 65,000,000 BC, Nobody Can Hear You Scream
I’ve written before about my enthusiasm for dinosaurs and, like waiting for a bus, you wait figurative (or literal) years for one, then three turn up at once. And why not? There’s no issue when we have, say four separate game franchises about racing or war or zombies, and each can have fans despite their similarities, but it helps when there are differences, instead of seeing different games which are mostly interchangeable.
Luckily, that’s the case with the three dino-horror games we have coming up. Second Extinction has a focus on squad-based action, Goner has a focus on survival akin to something like The Forest, and according to the new gameplay footage revealed at Gamescom, Deathground may just be the scariest of the three, taking inspiration from one of the scariest games ever made, Alien: Isolation.
From what we can see in the new gameplay footage there seems to be a focus on stealth, and there are distinct similarities in mechanics between the two games, including the radar which you can use to track your hunters and the ability to not only hide in lockers but lean against the back wall to avoid being seen.
‘
Of course, many games share similar gameplay, and where Deathground stands out from Alien: Isolation is a multiplayer component which we’ve yet to see in action, but presumably will have the same core mechanics. This will bring a new element to the game, as one player can cause a distraction to draw the enemies away from a teammate, whether to give them space to finish an objective or just buy them some breathing room if they’re cornered.
While story details are still thin on the ground, if the game is even half as tense as its inspiration we can expect to see dinosaurs in a terrifying new light.
