Death of Rose Drops New Gameplay Footage

Ready to Go Back to School?

After a tumultuous development that’s seen it canceled and subsequently revived, Death of Rose’s is finally on the horizon. We don’t have a release date quite yet, but during August’s Gamescon conference we got a new glimpse of the gameplay, and some new details on the game itself.

Inspired by 80’s horror, as well as the recent resurgence of the 80’s-inspired horrors like Stranger Things, the game is also mixing satire into the mix so, while it’s still a horror game, there’s still a lighthearted element to it akin to the late great ObsCure franchise. Throughout the game Scott refers to his adventure as… well, a game, so it seems like we may be getting a meta twist akin to Scream or The Cabin in the Woods.

The game tells the story of Scott, a young man exploring an abandoned school which is rumored to be the place of worship for a deranged cult. Helping him in the journey is Beth, a friend who remains in contact via walkie talkie throughout his journey.

We haven’t had any details on combat – not just the mechanics involved, but whether it’ll be a feature in the game at all – but we do know that there’s a heavy focus on environmental puzzles based on the history of the school.

The trailer also reveals that there’s an element of randomness to the game, with the horror elements being randomized so that a scene that makes one person jump out of their skin may not appear in another’s playthrough at all. Similarly, the dialogue is non-linear, with a branching dialogue tree and discussions between Scott and Beth taking place at different points in the journey. These elements mean that no two journeys through the setting will be the same, and it’s a feature we can hope will be carried over in future games in the series.
