Ed Boon Talks With Victor Lucas About the Future of Mortal Kombat

Surprisingly, Not Shaggy

Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon joined our fellow Canadian boy Victor Lucas on his weekly podcast Vic’s Basement this week. Obviously, being who he is and what Mortal Kombat is to gaming, Boon spoke mainly about the Mortal Kombat series. Starting out, Victor and Ed talked about the state of the world and gaming industry with so many game developers working from home. They also talked about other behind-the-scenes ventures such as how a guest character gets into Mortal Kombat; does an IP holder reach out to them or the other way around?

A classic question that creators of big franchises get is “what is the most requested thing from the fans?” When Ed Boon was asked, he didn’t even need to stop and think: “We want Mileena” he replied. Even though there was this huge campaign to bring in Shaggy from Scooby Doo into Mortal Kombat 11, fans really want that sexy demoness with the not-so-sexy mouth. In the current timeline, her fate is left fairly ambiguous after having flesh-eating parasites unleashed upon her. In the original timeline, Mileena is killed, however she had been brought back to life before. Characters in Mortal Kombat are constantly suffering fatal injuries, so it is never really off the table for a character like Mileena to return.

Ed Boon also took some questions from the community during this episode of Vic’s Basement and one of the most intriguing answers came from a question about Ash Williams. There have been a lot of rumors about Evil Dead’s Ash Williams showing up in Mortal Kombat and Ed did not outright say that he would not be appearing. In fact, he said “There’s one I wish I could comment on […] Perhaps on a future Vic’s Basement we can have a conversation like that.” If that does not say that something is in the pipeline, I don’t know what does. Mortal Kombat 11 is out now for PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Stadia.
