Departure of the Department
Fortnite’s most recent season saw a pretty extreme flooding to the island. A lot of things like cars have been sunk, but players have started to notice that there is a distinct lack of police cruisers on the island. Surely it not that they have all been submerged, but Epic Games may have just removed them entirely. It is no coincidence that they are disappearing right around all the civil unrest in America and many desperate calls for police reform and even “defunding” of police departments.
It may be a silent form of solidarity with protesters of police brutality, but it also might be a preemptive move to avoid a future controversy. Later in this Fortnite season, players will be able to drive vehicles around the island. Right now, there are civilian cars, ice cream trucks, and other vehicles around, but they only serve as cover and building resources. That will soon change. Imagine the backlash Epic Games would face if players brought up the fact that they could do drive-bys in police cruisers or run over other players in them. Best to just avoid it entirely.
Creative mode is also lacking in the police department. Junk rifts drop cars and there are police cruisers that exit the junk rifts, but they turn into other cars on the way down. It seems that Fortnite has canonized the abolishment of the police. Epic Games has not made any official announcement or statement in light of this apparent change. Fortnite is available on PC, Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices.
