But What About My Fan-Cast?!
Earlier this month, Cate Blanchett began talks with Lionsgate to enter the role of the siren Lilith in the Borderlands movie. Yesterday, it was confirmed to be the case. Despite my pleas to the universe who I thought should star in Borderlands movie, they will in fact be going with Cate Blanchett. She is a worthy choice, but what does this mean for the movie, the role, and the possible future of the franchise? The Borderlands games have definitive beginnings and endings to each installment, but always leave possibilities open for more. Will the movie do the same?
Lilith is a central character to the Borderlands games, it makes sense that Lionsgate would want a strong, decorated actress like Cate Blanchett to play her. That being said, it they really wanted to invest in this franchise, would they not want an actress a little less… experienced? Distinguished? You know what I’m trying to say. At the beginning of the Borderlands series, Lilith is almost 30 years Blanchett’s junior. If Lionsgate wants to make more Borderlands movies, does Cate Blanchett really want to be playing Lilith further into her 50s? Or are they willing to recast her?
Regardless of the plans for future Borderlands movies, having Cate Blanchett in the starring role certainly gives this movie more credibility and presence in Hollywood. Let’s just hope they don’t Super Mario Bros., Blood Rayne, Hitman, Prince of Persia, Need for Speed, or Assassin’s Creed it. The Borderlands Movie currently has no set release date.
Do you think Cate Blanchett is a good fit for Lilith? Let us know in the comments below.
