Some Interesting Insights From Co-Director Naoki Hamaguchi
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the co-director of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Naoki Hamaguchi has confirmed that part 2 is already under development. This probably doesn’t come as any surprise, considering that FF 7 Remake has been received excellently by critics and audiences alike. Of course, there are worries with everything with the Covid lockdown currently ongoing, but many workplaces have been making things work through online. We can only hope that it isn’t delayed any longer than it has to!
Hamaguchi had some very interesting insights in the interview, and he has some lofty goals with the project, stating that, “I believe that the purpose of a remake is to offer a title that has a universally beloved world to people of the current generation so that they can have an experience that’s just as surprising and moving as it was back then, and leave that title behind as a form of entertainment to be handed down for the next two decades to come.”
Hamaguchi himself was fifteen during the release of the original and remembers how it impacted him back then. He says, “To this day, I still remember the impact I felt when I experienced that world when playing the game. In Japan, you would receive a strategy guide if you preordered the title through DigiCube, so I would reread the strategy guide even when I wasn’t playing, just to immerse myself in the intoxicating world lore.”
One of the most interesting things for me was that he was inspired by Disney’s live-action remake of The Beuty and the Beast, which was a pretty lukewarm remake that definitely didn’t live up to the classic. With dreams of making FF 7 Remake being something to be passed down for next two decades, I think I would have been worried if I read this before the game came out. It goes to show you people can find inspiration everywhere.
