Cubic Motion Acquired by Epic

Studio Responsible for Facial Animations of God of War and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice

Realism is the hottest thing on the market yet again. The game industry goes through waves of wanting stylistic visuals to photorealism, and as we roll into new-gen territory, fidelity is where it is at. Highly anticipated games like Cyberpunk, Last of Us 2, and Resident Evil 3, are all going towards this route. So it comes as not a big of a surprise to hear one of the largest developers have just bought out one of the best animation studios, Cubic Motion.

Epic Games, which you may be familiar with through their online market place and developing Fortnite, have been incredibly impactful in the industry for a long while now. If you didn’t know, they developed the Unreal Engine, the most popular engine for developing triple-A titles. They also developed the Gears of War series as well. Of course, they’ve been riding the colossal wave that is Fortnite but it looks like they are revving up to build another high-fidelity game in the near future.

Cubic Motion seems like a no-brainer choice for the option as the facial animations in God of War 2018 and especially Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is absolutely impeccable. Additionally, Hellblade was developed on the Unreal Engine, meaning that Cubic is already intimately familiar with Epic’s own engine.

There’s definitely something exciting about anticipating a next title from a developer after a huge success. Of course, Epic is no newcomer to the scene, but Fortnite hit a degree of commercial success rarely ever seen. Followed by their launch of the online marketplace being the first one in a long while to ever even come close to challenging Steam’s golden throne. What kind of game do you think we’ll see out of Epic next? The safe bet is probably to say a third-person shooter from their track record, but who knows?
