More Trouble for the Streaming Platform
Nvidia GeForce Now, a game streaming platform is facing setbacks after setbacks with the news received today of 2K games pulls out of the platform. This comes weeks after other giants such as Blizzard (Overwatch, WoW, Hearthstone), and Bethesda (Skyrim, Fallout) have also pulled out. The service only launched a month ago, and it isn’t looking like a good platform to play major triple-A titles on it.
Streaming services, in general, are very new technology for lots of people, replacing the need for a powerful gaming rig with just a powerful internet. Other platforms like Stadia have been having a hard time maintaining healthy numbers with people reluctant to try the system out. News like this certainly doesn’t help. It gets increasingly hard to win people over onto a platform knowing that games you might be enjoying can be pulled from the shelves even before you are done playing the game.
Nvidia has stated that Blizzard and Bethesda’s departures have been due to a misunderstanding of contracts, but it is looking a bit strange when a third publisher, 2K Games pulls out as well. This comes just a week after they released a statement guaranteeing as many as 1,500 titles having signed up for the platform. GeForce Now has been in damage control mode but at this point, the best thing might be to figure out what is going on with these contracts and get these publishers back on the platform. If they can’t do that, I’d appreciate some honesty on their part of why they are dropping out, and if we shouldn’t get our hopes up for them returning.
What are your current thoughts on game streaming? I’m personally in no rush to jump in, as I mainly game on PC and own a decent computer. I do find the idea appealing though. However, I think I’ll hold off for a few years until they figure things out.
