A Battlefront Spinoff Was Reportedly in the Works
Another day, another cancelled EA Star Wars game. According to a recent Kotaku report, an open-world Battlefront spinoff was being made by EA Vancouver and UK-based Burnout studio Criterion and was scheduled to launch this year but eventually got cancelled last spring.
Development of the game, codenamed “Viking”, was started by EA Vancouver and, at some point, Criterion (which is currently making Need For Speed games) got involved in the project. According to Kotaku, that’s when the game ran into trouble.
“Although Criterion was, on paper, the lead studio, the logistical challenges of cross-country game development made that a difficult proposition,” Kotaku reported. “As one person involved with the game said, ‘too many cooks’ was a running theme. Criterion leads had an ambitious vision for the game, aiming to put a strong focus on story and characters.”
When it appeared that this Battlefront spinoff wasn’t going to be completed by EA’s deadline, the publisher ultimately decided last year to can the project.
